Handoffs

Handoffs is a weekly roundup of sports stories and blog posts gathered from around the interwebs that we find interesting, informative, and entertaining.

Pitch Invasion looks at "The Forgotten Film of the 1938 World Cup in France."

Sticking with the World Cup here, this isn't exactly sports related, but these photos via Boston.com's "Big Picture" of only a small section of the poverty in South Africa is important to keep in mind—if only to provide a bit of perspective—during the World Cup championship this weekend.

Words Between Spaces, a copy editor's blog that focuses on words, contemplates the origins of the word "Soccer". Also, check out Hendrik Hertzberg's less sporty but more thorough post on the subject.

This post by Joe Posnanski is from way back in November 2009, but it's an interesting look at the Yankees payroll, especially considering that the Yankees are (very likely) about to pick up Cliff Lee from the Mariners today.

Sick of the LeBron fiasco? Check out Order of the Court's look back at the "7 seconds or less" era of the Phoenix Suns.
